Bookworm Bites Summer Read Competition Launched

Lynford Reece

The JN General Insurance Bookworm Bites Summer Read 2012 competition will be launched earlier this year, says Lynford Reece, Senior  Manager, Distribution & Marketing, JNGI.

A collaboration between JNGI and the JN Foundation to engage primary school students through reading, the competition will begin on July 10, this year, providing students with more time to participate than last year, when it started on August 1.  Mr. Reece said the competition, now in its second year, ends on August 31, 2012.

“The initiative is in keeping with our focus on advancing the education agenda in Jamaica, particularly, eradicating illiteracy, and increasing numeracy at the primary school level,” Mr. Reece said. “Through the Bookworm Bites Competition, students will be encouraged to develop a habit of reading outside of the classroom.”

The competition is open to students at the primary level, from ages 6- 12. Entrants must be entering a particular grade level from grades one through to grade six at the beginning of the 2012/2013 academic year.

Students will be encouraged to read during their summer holidays, and prepare a book report on 3 of the books they have read, for entry into the competition. Entrants will be judged in the six to seven age category, the eight to ten age category, and the eleven to twelve age category.

“Our objective is to engender a reading culture among primary school students, and promote reading as a critical, and rewarding habit to develop.” Mr. Reece said.

JNGI locations islandwide will be used as collection and drop-off points for entry forms. Winners will be notified during the week of September 17, 2012, with prizes being awarded to the winners at their respective schools during the weekend of September 24, 2012.
