Garfield Ellis' 2015 novel, The Angels’ Share, hinges, as does much of his body of work, on the exploration of relationships. Although the author now lives in Canada and his themes are universal, Jamaica provides the context. Ellis likes a good story, but his strongest asset is his ability to explore relationships of all kinds. He is able to capture and expose feelings with a kind of unselfconscious openness, feelings of intimacy or animosity, resentment, pain.

In this first person account, the Storyteller is ambitious, upwardly mobile, conflicted, insecure, crotchety 37 year-old Everton Doril, a successful enough corporate employee, on the cusp of making his breakthrough into the bigger league. It is evident that his past is contributing to some difficulty in developing a committed relationship. His past is dominated by his relationship with his father.
